چکیده

Processes controlling preservation and accumulation of organic matter (OM) in marine sediments are highly sensitive towards both natural anthropogenic impacts. Thus, the sedimentary OM is considered a key proxy for characterization recent past environments . Along Peruvian continental margin (PCM), high primary production an intense oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) favor sediments. Spatial variations oceanographic conditions impact on productivity redox , particular OMZ intensity. These factors turn lead to spatial differences depositional preservation. Therefore, this study aims at characterizing nature types along PCM covering wide latitudinal bathymetric range. With purpose, total 29 surface sediment samples were collected from Tumbes (3°S) San Juan (15°S) analyzed by means petrography (palynofacies analysis) Rock-Eval pyrolysis. Results allowed PCM, predominantly amorphous, revealing its overwhelming origin. The highest abundances gelified amorphous OM, carbon S1 S2 fractions occurred southern part area, especially off Callao (12°S) Pisco (14°S), important upwelling centers. A principal component analysis performed description main In outer shelf well-preserved occurs whereas inner oscillations less pyrite formation North Callao, Huacho (11°S), mixed signal was observed. Finally, slope, transportation processes seem play role accumulation. This also evaluation certain proxies (e.g. hydrogen index index) routinely used palaeoceanographic studies. • Characterization margin. Organic areas zone. Low settings. Transport affect slope

Decomposition of dissolved organic matter from the continental margin

Decomposition of dissolved organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus (DOC, DON, DOP) was measured for surface and bottom waters of the middle Atlantic bight (MAB) and deep slope water adjacent to the MAB on two occasions in March and August 1996. We used standard bottle incubation techniques to measure the decrease in dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentrations over a 180-day interval. Generall...

Modeling Sedimentary Deposits on the Continental Margin

A first objective is to investigate the fabric (pattern) of seabed stratification on continental margins at small time and space scales (1 cm-50 cm depth into the seabed; 1 hr-3 yrs sedimentary record). To this end, we are testing the hypothesis that on muddy shelves such as the northern California shelf, Holocene event stratigraphy consists of the deposits of high-concentration storm regimes a...

Fluxes of dissolved organic carbon from California continental margin sediments

Fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from marine sediments represent a poorly constrained component of the oceanic carbon cycle that may affect the concentration and composition of DOC in the ocean. Here we report the first in situ measurements of DOC fluxes from continental margin sediments (water depths ranging from 95 to 3,700 m), and compare these fluxes with measured benthic fluxes fro...

Persistent organic pollutants and sedimentary organic matter properties: a case study in the Kishon River, Israel.

The Kishon River, the second largest coastal river in Israel, has been severely polluted for several decades. Sediments from upstream and downstream sites of the river were analyzed, lipid-extracted and evaluated for phenanthrene uptake. Total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentration in downstream sediments was 299 microg kg(-1), consisting mostly of petrogenic-derived PAHs. Downstre...
